WSET Level 3 in Sake is Here! Fall 2021



About this Course Offering


This course will start with a two-week online pre-study program. This program will review much of the information taught in WSET Level 1 in Sake as well as additional items to prepare you for your level 3 qualification course.


Your on-site Level 3 classes will take place on Monday evenings from 6:00 - 8:30 PM at Palate Partners School of Wine & Spirits here in Pittsburgh, PA. These classes will run from September 20th - November 15th; there will be no class held on October 4th.


There is no prerequisite for this class. If you have not yet taken Level 1 in Sake don’t worry, the two week pre-study online program fully prepares you to enter Level 3. WSET does not offer a Level 2 in Sake, so if you’re interested in getting your Sake certification, this is your class! :)

About Level 3 in Sake


Level 3 in Sake is a n advanced level qualification for professionals working with sake and serious sake enthusiasts.


This qualification will provide you with a detailed understanding of the production methods that affect the style, quality and price of sake. Upon completion you will be able to assess sakes accurately, and use this information and your understanding of sakes to make authoritative recommendations.


You will learn the main techniques that are used in the production of sake and how they influence style and quality, the principal and specialty categories of sake, the sake industry and the commercial importance of sake in the Japanese and export markets, and the principles behind the storage, selection and service of sake


Upon successful completion you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin, and will be able to use the associated WSET certified logo.

About Your Exam


Your Sake 3 Exam is split into two units:


  • Unit 1

    • a closed-book exam of 50 multiple-choice questions

    • a paper of short written answers.

  • Unit 2

    • a blind tasting of two sakes.



About Our Experts


Monica Samuels


Monica is the Director of Sake & Spirits for Vine Connections, a boutique importer of South American wines & Japanese sake. Before joining Vine Connections, Monica worked for Southern Wine & Spirits (Now SGWS) as Sake Ambassador for NY state, and for the national restaurant group SUSHISAMBA as their Corporate Sake Sommelier.


Monica has been teaching WSET sake courses for years. She also judges sake in international wine competitions, and writes articles for industry publications such as Sake Today.



Deb Mortillaro


Deb is a Certified Sake Sommelier and Pittsburgh’s leading sake expert. She is co-owner of Palate Partners School of Wine & Spirits and Dreadnought Wines.


Deb is also a Chef, graduated with honors from the Culinary Institute of America, and spearheads many events around the Greater Pittsburgh area. She has completed the WSET Educator Training Program, and holds WSET Certifications: Level 3 in Wine, Level 3 in Sake and is currently completing her Level 3 in Spirits Award.
